Calling BS on “Love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life!”

Toxic entrepreneurship + what to do about it

Here's the thing: I love my work. I love work nearly as much as I love my family. But it's work. And it's toxic to think otherwise. Toxic because if you love it, why not do it all the time, to the exclusion of all other things?

A friend of mine once told me that if he were paid to sit on a beach drinking beer all day, he'd find a way to complain about it.

But as entrepreneurs, we're building lives, not just careers. (Those of you who work for other people aren't doing yourself any favors by going beyond expectations just because you like what you do, either.)

So here's my rephrase:

“Love the process, love the work, and don’t apologize for working hard.”

But also?

Make sure you leave time in your schedule to play.

Because a great life includes filling all your buckets. And stop chasing the absurd notion that if you just found one thing you loved enough, you’d feel differently.
